To provide scholarships for those who have faced difficulties or major crises in the past and are finding a way to overcome them. Qualifications: Applicants must be residents of the state of Hawaii; demonstrate financial need; be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0; preference is given to recipients who were awarded in the immediate prior year if they continue to meet the eligibility requirements and remain in good academic standing; must attend a college or university in Hawai'i or another institution in the United States; must submit a separate essay describing how the applicant's life was personally impacted by a social issue such as incarceration, substance abuse, homelessness, domestic abuse, or violence; if applicable, the essay should also explain how a social services agency or organization helped support the applicant's positive transformation leading to the pursuit of higher education. Selection criteria: Selection will be based on committee criteria. How to apply: Applicants must submit online application form; should include FAFSA submission summary; most recent unofficial grade transcript; any short essays and/or other documents that may be required; additional documents: letters of recommendation, SAT/ACT scores for high school seniors, verification of organization affiliations, native Hawaiian ancestry verification.
